Neil Pagey

In memory of 10-time finisher Neil Pagey , in 2006 the Goondiwindi Triathlon Club introduced the Neil Pagey Sportsmanship/Team Spirit Award. The perpetual trophy is awarded to the club that not only brings a high number of competitors to the race, but the team in which has year after year contributed to what makes the atmosphere at the “Hell of the West” special.

The 2008 Neil Pagey award went to two Brisbane based clubs - the University of QLD Triathlon and Adventure Racing Club (known as UQ Triads) and the East Coast Cycos. Both clubs had 33 people each participating in the 2008 Hell of the West race. They have members who have been long time supporters of our race and we would like to thank both clubs for their continual support.

Athletes Comments:

“This was my very first ‘Hell of the West' and my very first long triathlon. I thoroughly enjoyed the event and wish that you extend my sincere thanks to all the volunteers who through their efforts made my race fun, safe and memorable. My parents came with me…they were thoroughly impressed with the organisation, set-up and location of the event so that supporters and spectators could also enjoy the day & take away fond memories.” I'll be back”…this event shall be on my calendar in future years. ” – Stephanie Howard, 2005

“Thanks for announcing club membership of placegetters, I'm sure it makes all club members proud to hear their mates being recognised. The club scene is growing every year.” – Allan Pitman, 2005–13 time finisher (East Coast Cycos)

“I spoke to a number of competitors on Sunday and they were very impressed with the event.  Many said it was run better and offered more value for money than the corporate run events.” – Drew Fox, 2006

“Of all the events I do, Goondiwindi holds the most special place in my triathlon heart. I always finish in the last handful of competitors so I'm no world-beater. I just love the atmosphere at Goondiwindi and the way the whole town comes out to support the competitors. After I completed my first race there was nothing I coveted more in my triathlon life than that magic Goondiwindi 5-year plaque; last year I was disgustingly excited when I crossed the finish line for the 5th consecutive time…. wild horses won't prevent me from competing in my 6th race (eyes now firmly fixed on the 10 year plaque).” – Janet Gorst, 2006 – 6 time finisher.

“Thank you for one of the best, most enjoyable and unique triathlon experiences imaginable. The organisation and atmosphere were superb and I cannot pick a single thing to fault with the race. You certainly show the management companies how it ought to be done - I simply enjoyed every minute.” – Steve Cannard, 2006

“As a bunch of thirties and forties year olds who swim, bike and run for a bit of fitness, we weren't sure what we were getting ourselves into. But you and your team, with your organisation, professionalism and laid back manner guaranteed we'll have fond memories of Gundy and "Hell"” - Steve Hull, 2006

“This was the best run, friendliest race I have ever been in. There was not one aspect that I felt could be changed! The way the athletes were made to feel really special by all the volunteers and spectators was simply incredible, it made myself and my friends feel like we were elite athletes such was the extent of the support at the aid stations, finish line and along the course. Amazing.” - Rob Tabuteau, 2008

“Just wanted to put it in writing what a spectacular job you and your crew did on the weekend. Gundi is a grass roots triathlon and it is why you get so many athletes coming back year after year.” - Mark Smoothy, 2008

“Great Event. Loved it! Can't wait to come back next year. Everything was so well organised and there was great help from the volunteers throughout the event as well. Thank you, and see you next February.” - Jerome Hey, 2008

“What a great event it was, very well organised, lovely local people and great track. I will spread around good worlds for Goondi and will definitely be back next year.” - Maurice Hendriks, 2008
